One negative with T5s is that the quality control on these lighting fixtures (not the bulbs themselves) is often lacking. This problem tends to be with of the HO T5 light ballasts/fixtures, and in fact tends to be a problem with VHO Compact Light Fixtures as well. For this reason my recommendation is to avoid the VHO or HO T5 or Power Compact CFLs and stick with the standard output versions. If higher output is needed consider more standard T5 lights or the newer technology HO LED lights instead such as the AquaRay line (the cheap LEDs such as the Finnex are NOT an option to a T5 lamp). In fact when cost per lumen as per lifespan is considered, a LED Aquarium Light Fixtureis now a much better deal (since LEDs can last 50,000 hours vs. the common 8000 lifespan of a HO T5 or VHO Power Compact).

Every light bulb ever made is manufactured with something called a ‘useful life’. This is how long the bulb is supposed to perform regularly (remain useful). So if you consider two separate aquariums running the same light bulbs—one aquarium has the lights on 18 hours each day, but the second aquarium runs the same light bulbs only 9 hours each day—you would expect that two light bulbs with an identical expected useful life will last twice as long.Combining LED lighting with a one-piece hood system, the tank hood system replaces older hoods for an updated look and improved illumination. This hood comes in four distinct sizes to accommodate fish aquariums and reptile tanks of all types, including an 18- to 24-inch, 24- to 36-inch, 36- to 48-inch, and 48- to 60-inch. The bulbs last for 17,000 operating hours and have minimal electric bill impact thanks to the 6000-kilowatt white bulb and 60-megawatt blue bulb.A quick and easy way to update an aquarium, the combines an LED light source with a sturdy plastic and glass hood that opens and closes for feeding, tank cleaning, and filter changes. The 60-watt bulbs last for a year or more. Since LED lights consume far less energy than their incandescent counterparts, the impact to monthly energy bills remains negligible whether the white light option runs during the day or the pleasing blue option illuminates the tank at night.Hello, I found this article very informative and useful, however I wish to build my own canopy for my fresh water aquarium.
