Saltwater To Go - Aquarium Systems SeaClone 100 Protein Skimmer
Review The Visi-Jet-PS Protein Skimmer made by Aquarium Systems was designed for smaller saltwater tanks, typically for aquariums up to 70 gallons. It utilizes a venturi type injector system to mix air and the tank water to create the fine bubbles needed for protein skimming. It is designed for in tank use and has a fairly sleek profile when compared to other skimmers. There are two items that need adjusting in order to get this unit to work properly. The first item is the water flow valve which can be adjusted from 20 gallons/hr up to 90 gallons/hr. The other item is the air flow valve which is simply a screw that you turn to regulate the amount of air entering the skimmer from outside the tank. To use this unit effectively you have to tweak both of these valves in order to reach the right amount of air and water flow. Too much air and you'll get tiny bubbles coming from the bottom of the unit. Too much water flow and you'll get water coming into the collection cup. Unfortunately, it took quite a while to get what seemed the proper settings for these two valves. One of the first questions new saltwater hobbyists seem to ask is whether they really need a protein skimmer for their first setup. Especially when they start to shop for a skimmer. The short answer is NO, you don't have to run a protein skimmer on your setup. There are many hobbyists that run successful systems without them. However, these hobbyists also realize the importance of regular partial water changes for the aquarium and how important water changes are to the health and well being of the animals in their care. The images united by aquarium systems protein skimmer instant ocean theme are considered to be rather trendy at present. Build a surface skimmer:
In today's video, I'm going to show you how to build a protein skimmer for a saltwater aquarium. A protein skimmer removes waste products or basically any decaying organic matter in a fish tank before it has the opportunity to break down and lower water quality. It does this by passing water through a skimmer, dissolved organic compounds in the water attach to the bubbles the skimmer produces. As the air bubbles rise, so do the organics now attached to the bubbles. The organics are then collected in a cup at the top of the skimmer and removed from the system.
