Keep Your Tank Beautiful with Aquarium Cleaning Supplies and Tools
It's important to note that you don't need to completely break down the tank everytime you have to "clean your tank" or perform aquarium maintenance. Most of the time you will just need to perform a partial water change (20 percent or so) with a good gravel vacuuming and maybe scrape a little algae off the front viewing panel. If you have a major algae problem then something is out of whack. You may be feeding too much, your tank may be overstocked, you're not performing frequent enough water changes, you're feeding the wrong types of foods, etc. Or, it could be a combination of the above. If you have a problem with cloudy water, please read the article on and be sure to keep up with your fish tank maintenance!Cleaning too much is a dreadful thing to do to a fish tank. One has to distinguish between mechanical cleaning an biological cleaning, which definitely is NOT the same thing. Most people think of the aquarium filter to be something like a vacuum cleaner in the house. Take away the dirt and everything is fine? Well, this is wrong. While too much detritus (decaying plants, animals etc.) is a bioburden to the tank, too little of it is a disaster, as it is the home for a living bacteria colony in your tank. plus, this detritus has been found to have a stabilizing effect on the ph value as it has some ion exchanging capacities. But that's another story. Each time you clean your aquarium you will need to replace about 20% of the water. Use your algae scrubber to scrape any algae off the front and maybe the sides of the tank. For acrylic aquariums, make sure that you won't scratch the acrylic with whatever you're using to clean the sides. Some use an old credit card for acrylic tanks. My Favorite Aquarium Scrubber:

It only takes a little time and commitment to bring an old used aquarium back to life. To make an aquarium safe cleaner, mix up a 1 part vinegar to 16 parts water solution ~1/2 cup vinegar to 1/2 gal H2O. This solution is a weak acid and will help dissolve suborn organics that may be dried to the glass surface. The razor blade can come in handy when tough dried algae and calcium stain are present. the razor blade will not scratch the glass and will help tremendously. Be careful not to puncture the silicone seals when using this tool.
f you are concerned your used tank wont hold water, you can test it out before you begin this cleaning process. Simply place the tank in a DRY location where its ok for water to leak, say the garage or back patio. Fill the tank to the top and let it sit for a a week or so. Check on the tank periodically for small leaks which will appear as small trails of water coming from the bottom. It the tank does not leak after this week long period, chances are your good to go.
