The IceProbe is the ideal cooling solution for small aquariums. This quiet, reliable, and efficient chiller uses advanced thermoelectric technology to directly covert electricity into cooling power.
With its threaded probe, nylon nut, and silicon washer, the IceProbe, can be easily bulkheaded through a 1.25" hole into siphon overflows, prefilters, sumps, or even directly into acrylic aquariums.
A single IceProbe can cool 10 gallons of water 6-8F below ambient air temperature in a standard aquarium. Multiple IceProbes can be used in a single aquarium to achieve higher temperature differentials.
The IceProbe provides continuous chilling power. A separate temperature controller must be used to turn the the device on or off at predetermined temperatures.
Weighing in at only 2 pounds, the IceProbe® is powered by a separate 12 volt D.C. power supply and draws less than 50 watts.
Saltwater reef tanks with corals, clams and other light needing organisms will need the high output, very high output Fluorescent or metal halide lamps. Certain corals, anemones and clams require very intense lighting levels that can only be provided with T5-HO, VHO and metal halide light sources. A general rule of thumb for reef tanks is between 4 and 10 watts per aquarium gallon. Many reefers have lighting systems incorporating metal halides and VHO Fluorescent tubes. Research the species you want to keep because light requirements can vary. Because of the amount of heat these light units can produce, you may need to get an aquarium chiller to keep your tank water temperature in an acceptable range. The expense of lighting a reef tank may be just as high or higher than the cost of the live rock or even the price of all the other equipment combined.

Coolworks also produces the MikroChiller aquarium chiller, a smaller chiller designed to be used in nano tanks where it chills the water and increase water movement. It can bring down the temperature in a 10 gallon aquarium up to 4-6 degrees. One company's nano chillers use the Peltier effect to directly convert electricity into cooling energy. The Peltier effect describes the way that, when a current is sent through dissimilar conducting materials, heat will be absorbed on one side but not the other. In these chillers, the hot side is insulated from the cool side so the cool side can face into the aquarium and cool the water. This technology has a relatively high energy cost per unit of cooling, but offers very small cooling devices with no moving parts. These chillers are able to cool about 10 gallons of water, so if the tank is larger than that, more than one chiller would be required. With a standard immersion chiller I got a 12 gallon batch down to 80F. The bath of r/o water (about 10 gallons) in the cooler was chilled from room temp to 42F in a few hours with the 1/10 hp aquarium chiller. Within a hour of circulating the bath water through the immersion chiller in the fermenter--the wort got down to 62F and the cooler water increased to 52F.
