Sparkling water and brightly colored fish provide a peaceful ambiance to a room. While the removes some debris, a layer of old food, excrement, and dead plant materials drift down into the gravel. Fish tank maintenance is an easy task when owners use a siphon to clean the gravel and replace up to 25 percent of the water each week. When purchasing an aquarium siphon, owners should consider the size of the aquarium and the type of siphon needed for cleaning it.

Probably the easiest way to do this is to gently suck on the lower(bucket) end of the siphon tube while holding it above the bucket, butlower than the water level in the aquarium. As soon as the water getspast the edge of the fish tank and begins to flow down the tube, remove your mouth from the siphon and allow the water to flow into thebucket. However, some people think that this method is a disgustingway to get a siphon started (though the water in your aquarium shouldbe no more harmful to you than it is to your fish). In these cases, there are other ways to get your siphon started.Another option to get a siphon started is to lower the entiresiphon into the aquarium slowly, making sure that you get all of theair out of the tube. Then you can plug the one end of the tube withyour finger or thumb and lift that end out of the tank (being carefulthat the other end does not come out of the water) and lower it towardthe bucket before releasing your finger. When you release your finger, the water should start to flow into the bucket. Some other gravel vacuums have a valve in them that will allowwater to flow one way, but not the other. The manufacturers of theserecommend that you shake the gravel vacuum rapidly up and down in theaquarium to push water past that valve and into the tube. In thismanner you can get the siphon started by just getting water pushedover the lip of the fish tank when it can start to flow downward intothe bucket. I find that using this method always makes the aquariumunnecessary messy and often creates a mess. I also find that this isthe most difficult method to use to get a siphon started.---Project Materials--- Ball Valve: Vinyl Tubing: Hose Connectors:

Aquarium siphons are overpriced, especially if your looking for a large one with a long reach. Our solution is the design we highlight in our video. You have total control over how large the siphon inlet is and more importantly how long the output tubing is. The ball-valve we added to the siphon enables the user to stop and start the flow of water for emptying your bucket of tank water, without having to restart the siphon when you back and ready to finish.
Preforming water changes is crucial in aquarium maintenance. Over time, excess nutrients can build up and cause algae blooms and other problems. Generally speaking, water changes should be preformed every couple weeks, the size of your aquarium, number of fish you keep and plant density will vary the frequency and size of these routine water changes.
