AquaFarm - Self-cleaning fish tank that grows plants - fun ecosystem. Best thing ever!
If you are not particularly sold on a aquaponic system for a variety of reasons, including the cost or need for plants, the biOrb Classic is your best option. This self-cleaning fish tank is designed for both form and function. It’s aesthetically pleasing and comes in a number of sizes: , , , and . The tank itself has a built in filtration system that includes a pump, air stone, filter cartridge, and ceramic media. The entire low maintenance filtration system is completely self contained. Water circulates through the ceramic media where fish and other waste are collected and toxins are absorbed. The remaining water and waste then pass through the sponge filter cartridge cleaning the water and trapping waste and particles. Clean water is then oxygenated and pumped up to the top of the aquarium. This system and it’s self cleaning process is really great and will cut down on your cleaning and maintenance time tremendously.
This aquarium has a few other issues that you should be aware of. It does not come with a grow light and plants need light. As soon as you introduce natural light for the plants you will get a major algae bloom. Therefor this fish tank kit will definitely require a grow light. It will also need a heater for almost any fish you decide to put in it. The tank materials themselves are not the best and can warp over time and it does have a fairly high price tag. As mentioned previously, no tank can be completely cleaning and maintenance free. Overall it’s a good option for a self cleaning and self sustaining fish tank with some forethought and planning, but don’t expect it to be just purchase as is and go.

Best self cleaning fish tank i ever seen design by @NouxPets
Maintaining our in home aquariums can take up a large part of our day. Sure you could simply remove all of your fish and give the tank a through scrub rather than regular maintenance but this actually hurts the environment you are trying to create. To keep the tank going long term consistent action must be taken, and what better tool could there be than the tank itself?
When you find the best self cleaning fish tank that suits your home the work needed to house fish, frogs and inverts are cut back dramatically. Unfortunately there are far too many aquariums springing up that are far from self cleaning and actually cause more work than a plain tank.
The majority of the self cleaning fish tank designs are plant based, with a few that focus on unique suction designs. Most of the latter have failed but personally I've found one that works perfectly. Self-cleaning Betta fish tanks are becoming hugely popular, and the NoClean Aquariums Gravity Flow is a best seller. This tank claims to be a true . Cleaning it is as simple as pouring some fresh water in the top, and the tank does the rest. First of all the design has to look good. While this may seem vain or snobby if the tank looks bad we probably wouldn't even want it no matter how well it works. That brings us to the second point, functionality. Just as design, if the functionality doesn't work the tank is of no real use to us. Of those that do work it's a question of how well they work.
The third and final condition is the size of the tank. Because self cleaning fish tank designs are hard to come by it is also understandable they have some limitations. Specifically plant based self cleaning fish tanks will not be too large, as plants can only absorb so much of the waters nitrates(the final product of fish waste.) Finding a balance between size and effectiveness is our goal here. After plenty of testing and returning we have found the best self cleaning aquariums on the market.
