Caught my betta fish sleeping on my green hedge plant at 9:50 pm...what a character....he's so adorable....I knew he was special...:)
I bought a betta fish who lived with me for 2 weeks, but he ended up dying. He was a really happy fish- his tank was big, he had colorful rocks, a little cave to swim into, a filter, and some plants- I had a heater, but he died before I got to put in the heater. He started to slow, he was sleeping all the time, he refused to eat, and his tail/fin had holes (it looked like fin rot, but I was going to give him medicine later today, but he died before I got the chance to..) I loved him so much, I can’t believe he’s gone… Please, I just want to know where I went wrong.
Piff,my betta fish, has his light on all day and I turn it off when I go to sleep and my tank gets colder when the light is off, at least i think. How do I keep my tank warm without a heater?????

When the heck do they sleep? Or what do they look like? Beta fish are very calm and are very light sleepers. They usually can sense movement around even though there are eyes are closed somehow. They make these plastic leaves to put into your betta tanks that are designed for your fish to sleep on. They are called betta hammocks. Here is Fish may not tuck themselves into bed at night, but they all sleep at one point or another. Fish that are primarily active at night sleep during the day. Fish like bettas that are mainly active during the day do most of their sleeping at night. For one thing, betta fish are more complex than you might think. They’re , which means that they actually breathe air from the surface of their tank. They can also tell the difference between night and day, which directly affects their sleeping patterns. Yes, betta fish actually ! The question still remains whether bettas experience sleep in exactly the same way that people do. After all, they can't close their eyes because they have no lids. So it's not immediately apparent what they are up to. Do they fully loose consciousness like people do? Perhaps not since they are very territorial and on constant guard against interlopers, even if they are the only fish in their tanks. Still, they do appear to take time out to rest, and this is the equivalent of sleep for humans.
