Do you know which betta fish tail types you have?
Often in Bettas you will find they have two tails growing out of the tail base. With the two tails you also see a doubling of the other two unpaired fins. The dorsal will have a double or broader base and the anal should also be wider and fuller. If you draw a line through the center of the fish horizontally, one expects to see mirror images with relation to finnage. The better DT's have the tail split all the way to the tail base. This fin/tail type involves fins whose rays extend well beyond the webbing of the fin itself, giving the fish a spiky appearance. The standard for showing bettas states that for a fish to be classified as a Crowntail, the extended rays must account for at least 1/3 (33%) of the fin length, with webbing existing for no more than 2/3 (66%) of the fin's length. This fin variety most closely resembles wild betta splendens, as long tails and the subsequent tail types were all selectively bred by human intervention. These fish are often mistaken for female bettas, who generally have shorter fins, but this is an entirely different variety of betta. Males can be distinguished by females by their longer ventral fins, more pointed/angled anal fin, and slightly different body shape. Betta fish are well known for their beautiful tails but do you know all the different betta fish tail types out there? Do you know what type of tail your betta fish has? Betta fish are also bred to have a . These can include the Veil Tail, which is the most common type, where the tail appears to arch up before draping down like a veil. Crown Tail Bettas have spiky, separated tips on their fins, while Half-Moon Tails have straight edges and, just like a half-moon shape, spread open in a 180-degree angle. Rose Tail Bettas have so much going on in the fin department, their tails drape and overlap, giving them the appearance of overlapping rose petals. Although similar to Rose Tails, the fins on Feather Tail Bettas have a more ruffled, feathered appearance. Other tail types include the Delta, Super Delta, Double Tail, Spade Tail and many more. Betta fish with crowntails are a very popular choice. Named because of the spikey appearance of the fins – just like that on the top of a crown.
