The Rainbow Cichlid are open breeders and form nuclear families in which the older siblings care for the younger. Buy several juveniles and let them form pairs naturally. Once you have a pair, condition them on frozen foods like brine shrimp and blood worms.Provide a flower pot or flat stone for the spawn. The tank should have a pH of 7.0, a water hardness of 5 - 10° dH, and a temperature of 82° F (28° C) for breeding with frequent water changes. The pair may turn a dark color when becoming ready to spawn. The female will lay 300-1,000 eggs out in the open on a rock or root. the parents will fan the eggs for 3 days until the fry hatch and then move them to another area of the tank. Be aware that at times new parents may eat some of the fry. If you are worried they are eating too many, you can move the fry to their own tank. The fry can be fed freshly hatched baby brine shrimp or Cyclopeeze. After a week you can feed them crushed flake food. It would be a good idea to remove any other fish that may eat the fry during the night like catfish or plecostomus. See more about cichlid breeding in: .
Due to their beautiful colors and manageable size, cichlids have become one of the most popular fish for aquarium hobbyists to keep. Though some are predatory and eat virtually no plant matter, most of these tropical fish are primarily herbivores, gaining the majority of their needed nutrition from algae. However even the cichlid herbivores will also ingest small animals (such as invertebrates) as supplemental parts of their diets.
In Pet Mountain's Cichlid Food store you'll find a huge selection of premium daily diets from the aquarium fish care industry's most trusted leaders, including Wardley, Hikari, Tetra, Marineland, Seachem, and the San Francisco Bay Brand. Providing your cichlid with wholesome, nutrient filled flake or pellet food, supplemented by freeze-dried bloodworms and other small invertebrates can help ensure its health, vibrancy and longevity.

This is my first experience with African Cichlids. After hours of researching fish, equipment, etc. online, I decided I had to have a bunch of the beautiful blue and black striped demasoni. I set up a new 55 gallon tank, and while waiting an endless 6 weeks for it to cycle, searched around for a place to buy them. Not available in Jacksonville, but I came across several positive reviews about this place in Daytona that specializes in cichlids. Sent an email with a couple questions and received a prompt, friendly reply from Billy. When my tank was finally cycled, I made the 1 ½ hour drive down to Daytona. I’m glad I made the trip. Billy and Gary were so helpful—I was there for more than 2 hours looking at the amazing selection of beautiful fish, asking questions, and taking advantage of their years of experience to get as much advice as I could. In all, I bought 29 fish, including a dozen demasoni and various compatible Mbuna tankmates, plecos and catfish. All are settled into their new home, happy and healthy, but if I have questions or run into any problems, I know who to call. Gary even gives out his cell phone number in case of an emergency – now that’s real customer service!Itis really neat to see all of the amazing dwarf cichlid species thathave been photographed. However, you need to understand that very fewof these species are available to the average hobbyist. If you thinkthat you can find a fish you like on the Internet and then get thatspecies you will likely be in for a big disappointment. Unless you arelooking for one of the common staples in the hobby it is not unusual tohave to search for many years to find a specific species. It's not atall unusual for a species to show up one year then vanish from he hobbyfor many more years. My advice - go ahead and build a wish list but buywhat you can when you can get them!
