Pond Heaters for Ponds & Water Gardens | That Fish Place
If koi and goldfish don’t need the water warmed, what’s the deal with pond heaters and de-icers, like the , or de-icers?
As mentioned above, there are varying theories on what temperature a pond should be kept at for optimal koi health. While some koi keepers use fish pond heaters to keep their ponds at a constant temperature all year round, there are others that believe koi need a 'resting period' similar to what they might experience in a typical short, but harsh Japanese winter. To emulate this, a proven temperature regime is to heat the water to a minimum of 13 degrees Celcius (55 degrees F) for 40 weeks, then slowly lower the temperature by a degree each day until the temperature of the water reaches it's natural temperature. At this point the fish pond heater can be turned off for six weeks. After the six-week period is up, the heater can be turned back on while increasing the temperature by one degree each day until the pond is back to normal operating temperature. If by chance you live in a very cold climate, it is a good idea to keep your heater on a low setting for the 6 week resting phase to keep your pond operational and free of ice.
There are three main types of fish pond heaters that have become popular: Gas-fired boilers, inline electric water heaters and deicers. As a koi pond heater, all work well at their intended purpose.

A pond heater is very important if you have koi fish in the pond
A pond heater is a must have if you have a fish pond at home. During the freezing winter months, the water of the pond becomes very cold and thus poses a problem for the aquatic plants and animals. The pond heater helps maintain the temperature of the pond and ensures no harm is caused. There are various factors to keep in mind while selecting a pond heater, a few of which are discussed below.
Option 1: Based on Heating Needs As winter progresses, a thin layer of ice starts forming on the surface and can be very dangerous for the aquatic creatures. Floating pond heaters are used to heat the surface of the ponds during winter to prevent ice formation. If you want to heat the depths of the pond, you will have to buy the submersible pond heaters which can do this work very efficiently. A submersible heater can heat water over a large surface area as compared to its floating counterpart. If you have an , it is very important to create a healthy living environment year-round, especially if the pond contains fish and live plants, and a fish pond heater can help you do just that. There are two basic types of —submersible heaters and heaters that float along the surface. Learn more about how each functions before you make the choice of which to buy.Option 2: Based on the Mode of Heating You have electric pond heaters and heaters that work on heating coils. Electric heaters were among the first set of pond heaters that came into the market. Though a lot of people use this, it is not highly recommended because of the possible threats it poses. There are chances of short circuit that can kill all the fish in the pond. Chances of a person getting electrocuted are also high. In comparison to them, heating coils take an upper hand because these are easy to use and not as dangerous. Another benefit is that these coils are available at an affordable cost.
Option 3: Based on Size You have pond heaters that are built to suit the size of your pond. If you have a small pond with few plants and fish, then, you can go in for compact heaters. These equipments are small and user friendly. They also have a very contemporary look and are very reliable. If you are looking for pond heaters that are technologically advanced and capable of running by themselves without a lot of intervention from your end, then, compact heaters come highly recommended.
However, if you have a pond spanning a large area, then, you have to go in for bigger heating systems. Though they are also dependable and easy to use, they are not as technologically advanced as the compact ones. If you go in for a bigger pond heater, you will also have to make sure that it is placed in a secure place. You will have to be very careful while making this selection because a large heater when not needed can prove to expensive and waste energy while small heaters for large ponds will be ineffective and cannot meet the heating requirements. In order for your fish to stay healthy all year around, it’s important that oxygen be able to enter the pond and toxic gases be able to leave. Neither of these processes is possible whenever the surface of the pond is frozen over with a layer of ice. A floating fish pond heater rests on the surface of the water and turns on whenever the air temperature dips to a certain degree. While some of the pond may freeze, the floating heater ensures that a portion of it doesn’t so the fish get the oxygen they need.
