I found a large, clear, sphere-shaped glass bowl at a floral supply shop. A glass vessel of this shape is called a “rose bowl”, and they come in —mine happens to have a 15″ diameter at the widest point. Part of the success of these types of container gardens is providing for good drainage because glass containers don’t have bottom drainage holes like regular flower pots. You can use container to make yours, or brandy snifter to a fish tank.
Fish bowls are a lot like aquariums, but they need to be cleaned much more frequently, especially if they aren’t equipped with a filter. If the fish bowl doesn’t have a water filter, change the water frequently, but only by 10-to-15 percent of it at a time. For small fishbowls, remove the fish and place them in a large glass with enough water from the tank to make them comfortable. Then, follow the above instructions for scrubbing the sides and decorations, making sure to never use soap or detergents.

The truth is a glass fish bowl, small plastic tank or vases are actually harder to take care of than a large-sized aquarium tank. It is difficult to maintain the water’s quality in any aquarium tanks less than 10 gallons (40 L) since the toxin gets compounded quickly due to the small volume of water. And poor water quality usually leads to a sick Guppy fish. The benefits of a fish bowl as opposed to an aquarium tank include low start-up costs as well as simplicity in set-up, spatial needs and maintenance. Not every fish can thrive happily in a bowl, however, and in some cases simplicity might need to be sacrificed for convenience. For example, the rule of thumb is that any bowl-dwelling fish should have at least one gallon of water per inch of fish. When you add in fish and snail friends, the size needs also increase. Traditional glass fish bowls are usually around one gallon: This means one fish that is one inch in length. Aeration and filtration can double the amount of fish to space, but accessory options are slim due to the fish bowl design and size.
