Sexing platy fish. KNOW THE DIFFERENCE! Too many males and they will fight.
The southern platyfish has been released probably due to fish farm or aquarium releases. Specimens in Louisiana were collected near a tropical fish farm. Southern platies, and other introduced poeciliids, have been implicated in the decline of native damselflies on Oahu, Hawaii. Often the distributions of the damselflies and introduced fishes were found to be mutually exclusive, probably resulting from competition for limited insect food.
The Platy is a fairly small but active fish that does well when kept in groups with others of the same species and with other small community fish. Platies prefer warm tank waters in the 70 to 77 temperature range with a fairly neutral pH value between 6.8 and 8.0. These fish prefer soft to slightly hard water between 10 and 28 dH and they can tolerate some salt in the water. A tank for Platies should be planted densely with plenty of rocks, caves, and driftwood hiding places.

The Platy is a very peaceful fish and makes an excellent addition to the freshwater community aquarium. Any other peaceful fish can be housed with themWe have one of these beautiful fish in our 20 gallon tank. It swims very fast, but most of the time it likes to hang out near the bottom and look at its own reflection on the tank walls. Its tankmates are an opaline gourami, a red wag swordtail, and a red lobster. The swordtail and the platy love to hang out together and play tail tag. Whenever a newcomer arrives, they both watch together. I ordered 5 platy's which arrived on time and in great shape. I received a nice assortment of fish 2 blue, 2 orange, and 1 yellow. They are easy to care for and they're also very active. They love swimming in the water return from the filter and chasing each other around the tank. At least one was pregnant because I found 2 babies in my tank 4 or 5 days after I put them in. Overall I'm happy with them and the customer service from LiveAquaria. The Blue Mickey Mouse Platy adds brilliant color to the aquarium and are very easy to keep.
