Tropical Fish Species | Freshwater Tropical Fish Species: Plecos
Can a person keep Plecos together in the same tank? Or what catfish tank mates can live beside them?
The plecostomus belongs to the family Loricariidae, and the genus Hypostomus. There are close to 700 species of catfish in the family Loricariidae. The genus Hypostomus has more than 120 species, and about 50 of them are similar to the species plecostomus in appearance, size, habits and requirements. For this reason, pet stores sell several different species and call them all plecostomus. They are often called plecos, sucker-fish or suckermouth catfish.
Ancistrus species, L-144 and L-144a. This fish is available in black (L-144), albino (L-144a) and other colors. Habitat: Provide wood for this species to gnaw on, and provide it with shelter, such as rocks, for it to hide. Brisk-moving, clean water is needed. Description: The male is identified by its large bushy whiskers. Females have very stubby whiskers (if they have them at all). It has been successfully bred in the aquarium, making it particularly appealing. The mortality rate of some wild-caught plecos is staggering. Medusa head pleco (A. ranchulus), L-34. These plecos sell fast, and you might have to reserve one. Size: 5 to 6 inches Temperament: Generally peaceful but probably should not be mixed with other bottom-dwellers. Temperature: 74 to 79 degrees Diet: Omnivore. Feed it a mixed diet, and include bloodworms. Habitat: Provide wood and overhead shelter to allow it to hide. This is a plant-safe fish, but it likes to dig while foraging and could possibly uproot smaller plants. Provide wood and caves for its shelter.
My fish is gone? Do Pleco fish eat other fish?
I'm a new pleco owner any tips on what fish I can put with him
Fish, like humans, need a varied diet to get all the nutrients they need to be healthy. All commercially produced fish foods have to have some type of binder to get the nutrients to the fish. This is usually wheat or soy. Fish cannot break down these binders so this just ends up as waste in your tank. Adding fresh fruits and vegetables into your fish's diet with The Pleco Feeder provides them with easily digestible nutrients to help them thrive. The minimum tank size for a clown pleco is 20 gallons, and for each additional clown pleco, try to have an extra 10 gallons just so there is enough room for each fish to have it's own territory. They will hang out on the side of the tank but mostly the bottom of the tank, where algae, and primarily driftwood is located. The primary diet is driftwood, but they need to supplement their diet with vegetation, so adding algae wafers, and fresh veggies like cucumber, lettuce, etc.
