Think about the last time you went to the fish counter. Row upon row of glistening seafood, sprawled out on ice like a still life. It's beautiful, sure, but shopping for fish can be overwhelming. Wild caught versus farmed? Frozen or not? And which fish are even okay to eat these days?
Shopping for Fish - The New York Times
Shopping for fresh fish at the grocery store can be overwhelming
Door County's best shopping destination is in the heart of Fish Creek on Main St. With 15 different shops, boutiques, galleries and restaurants, there's something for everyone. Situated in front of the bluffs, walk our wood chip paths and spend a day shopping, eating and enjoying the great outdoors of Fish Creek. Most stores open 10am-9pm during the season. And unfortunately, prohibitively high prices aren't the only thing that's intimidating about shopping for fish. I also care where my fish comes from. It's impossible to eat seafood without thinking about the environmental and dwindling wild fish populations.Welcome to Founder's Square in downtown Fish Creek, Wisconsin. The 13 shops at Founder's Square offer a great shopping experience for anyone. Hover over the buildings above to view shop information or click on the building to find out detailed information on each business.• Handle properly: When shopping, ask for your fish to be packed with a separate bag of crushed ice to keep it cold. Refrigerate whole fish up to two days; fillets and steaks one to two days. Place the fish in a plastic bag, then top with a zip-top plastic bag filled with ice. Thaw frozen fish in the refrigerator. To defrost safely and quickly in one to two hours, place the fish in a sealed plastic bag in a bowl of cold water, changing the water often.
I’m a sucker for these nature takes over man-made monstrosities themed photo essays. Thousands of fish have taken over the now derelict New World Mall in Bangkok. The onetime Thai shopping emporium was shut down in 1997 due to building code violations and a massive fire that destroyed its roof. Apparently rainwater slowly filled the abandoned building and caused a major mosquito outbreak in the area. It was a bad enough problem that in an effort to stop the mosquitos, locals introduced freshwater fish to the abandoned mall to eat the insects. I've shopped at That Fish Place a few times spread over 10 years or more. I've never had an unsatisfactory experience. Sometimes you want to get your hands on a product and look it over before buying. Your local store has that covered. But if you know what product you need this is the place to save money! Dry goods are the same no matter where they come from so I'm a big fan of stocking up on the cheap!
