May 16, 2016 - But they are also very aggressive, very complex fish and, except for a few species, do not belong in a tank smaller than 55 gallons
Before you set up a boxfish species tank, study the members of this family to see how big they get. Some grow quite large and will become too big for the average home aquarium. Some of the best boxfish for species tanks are the blue boxfish (Ostracion meleagris) and the reticulate boxfish (O. solorensis). The males of both are very colorful and they remain relatively small (a 55-gallon tank should suffice). It’s possible to house a male and female together. The sexes differ in color. The female blue boxfish is brown with white spots, while the male is blue with white and yellow spots. The female reticulate boxfish is yellowish with white lines and dark reticulations, while the male of this species is blue overall with light spots and lines.
Pterapogon kauderni. Other names: Highfin Cardinaln, Kaudern’s Cardinalfish. Look for tank bred specimens (easily found) for purchase and recommended as wild-caught specimens from their native Banggai Islands in Indonesia are being pressured. Slow, mid-level methodical swimmers, they need at minimum a 30 gallon tank with a cave. Better when kept as a single fish or mated pair in smaller tanks; aggressive behavior can occur when they are kept in larger groups. Kauderni are mouth brooders with the male (discerned by a more rounded jaw than the female) carrying the eggs in his mouth to protect them after spawning. Mated pairs are relatively easy to breed and raise the fry. Carnivores, they need a well balanced meaty food diet such as adult brine shrimp, feeder shrimp, chopped seafood, Mysis shrimp, bloodworms, live feeder fish as well as frozen preparations for carnivore fish.
Nano Fish For Small Aquariums | My Aquarium Club
10 Best Freshwater Aquarium Fish For Beginners | Home Aquaria
Finding small saltwater fish tank species for a small marine aquarium (nano tanks) is not difficult and they are often easily found in local saltwater reef stores and online. If you have a small saltwater aquarium it is vital to keep it lightly stocked and your water parameters stable. Make sure you research any fish you decide to get before you go to the store. Do not make that impulse buy or you may regret it later.Note: Please do not keep fish in any aquarium smaller than 5 gallons. These extreme nano tanks cannot hold a stable cycle and you should only keep invertebrates with a small bioload in them. Please also do not keep more than one species of fish in a nano tank to prevent overcrowding. list contains some suggestions for suitable invertebrates.Any fish tank from 10 to 30 gallons could be considered a small saltwater fish tank for the purposes of this article. Really, any saltwater tank under 30 gallons is going to be a chore to maintain (my opinion of course, to each his own). Nano tanks are often considered even smaller. It should also be noted that the smaller the fish tank the harder it is to keep in my opinion. Larger tanks provide so many more options for both equipment and fish species and I strongly urge any new hobbyists to get the largest tanks they can accommodate. Leave the smaller specialty for when you become more experienced later on.Dwarf crayfish species from the Cambarellus genus can also be kept at room temperature and are, as the name suggest, much smaller than their big cousins. They are also known to be much less aggressive and more suitable for community aquariums, so if you’re not ready to set up a single species tank these may be a better choice for you. A tank of at least around 8 gallons (30L) with plenty of hiding places is a good start!
