WHITEFISH BAY — Whitefish Bay police are warning pet owners to be alert after a small dog was apparently killed by two coyotes.
We have whitefish fishing in Sandybeach Lake. Lake whitefish and river whitefish are the two species and our Ontario fishing lodge has the lake species. Our guests have the opportunity to catch whitefish in the 5 to 10 pound range. Whitefish have a small sucker-looking mouth about the diameter of your thumb. Anglers use lures small enough to fit in the whitefish's small mouth. Whitefish fishing is 50 to 60 feet down in the deep water of Sandybeach Lake. The guests at our Ontario fishing lodge will jig or troll in whitefish fishing.
Whitefish or Lake Whitefish inhabits cold, deep-water lakes in the northern United States and Canada. Most commonly found in the waters of Lake Michigan, Huron, Erie and Superior. It is the most valuable commercial freshwater fish in Canada. Whitefish roe or Golden Caviar is also highly regarded. They are silvery, small mouthed, freshwater fish in the salmonidae family. They are related to the salmon and trout, although have pure white meat unlike their cousins. Whitefish are at their peak in colder weather when the meat tends to be firmer and fattier. Whitefish is known as one of the best-eating freshwater fish there is. The delicate white meat has a high fat content that gives it a wonderful richness and lends itself to smoking. The mild flavor is more like salmon than trout. The meat is medium-firm with a large flake. They are caught using trap nets, gill nets and hook and line. Trap net fish are the highest quality and located on the Green List. Commercial regulations are controlled within the United States and Canada. The seasons vary by lake and state, although there are fish available year round. They will even fish through the ice in the winter.

They are yellow-brown dorsally and fade to white ventrally. Their anal and dorsal fins have three bands: wide yellow near the body, light blue in the middle, and thin yellow on the margins. Their caudal fin is broad with a yellow tinge. Their pectoral fins are long and pointed with a blue tinge and a central yellow stripe near the margin. They lose their brilliant coloration shortly after death. They have a relatively deep head with a steep profile, a small mouth with thick fleshy lips that reach the front of the eyes, and serrated gill covers with one short blunt spine. Their anal fin has one or two spines and 22 to 26 rays; their caudal fin is deeply forked in adults; their dorsal fin has seven to ten spines and 24 to 27 rays. Both anal and dorsal fins have very long bases. Males and females are similar in appearance and unlike their close relative, the Pacific Golden-Eyed Tilefish, are also similar in size. Their body is covered with rough scales. If you live in Canada or the upper parts of the United states there is a good chance you have tried to catch yourself one of these guys.
