Fish Tank Lighting - LED Light Fixtures, T5 HO Lights, Aquarium Hoods, Fluorescent Lights & More
The most popular and common types of bulbs and fixtures available to light your aquarium include , (mogul and HQI bulbs), (T5 HO bulbs), (PC), (T12 VHO bulbs), and (NO). For aquariums requiring high intensity lighting (like a reef tank), we recommend looking at a metal halide bulb system, LED system or a fixture that contains T5 bulbs (or a combination of these). For a fish only system, you can choose any type of fixture you choose with Normal Output fish tank bulbs being the most common.
I just bought a 55 gallon fish tank and it came with a canopy that was home made and a double tube T5 fixture from home depot. I did my research and this can be the cause of major algae problems which I helped the guy break the tank down and algae was EVERYWHERE! so I was thinking about purchasing new light fixtures but I wasnt sure if I should change them or not.

I currently have a 48" SkyLED Fixture on my 60 and while I enjoyed it for the first few months, I am pretty dissatisfied with how the lighting is now. Everytime I see another tank lit up by a T5 HO fixture, it makes me jealous because it is so much better vs LED. The only exception is exactly what was pointed out by somefish, unless you have the $$ to buy a high end LED fixture, I wouldn't bother with them.
