Goldfish are coldwater fish..not really cold though..more like cool..if the water is lukewarm they tend to eat a lot..I keep mine at around 20 Celsius that would be 68 Fahrenheit…..the temperature should NOT be above 74 Fahrenheit or above 24 Celsius..and don’t give them flakes as most flakes are fillers..you can give them frozen bloodworms, soaked sinking pellets or soilent green (rephasy-i think that’s what its called)..these is what I feed my goldies..
To prevent this from happening in the future, you need to feed your fish what they can eat in 2 minutes, once a day. Also a varied diet consisting of fruit and veggies are highly recommended. Please visit Feeding Goldfish article for more info.

What Do Goldfish Eat Besides Goldfish Flakes
I ran out of fish food, I bought goldfish like a year ago they were only $.13 but I bought them because they were going to be feds other fish and there is like 1 million of them and I have two little girls so whatever they were happy LOL anyway I just gave my fish little pieces like I try to take a roll which is bread and apple pieces off and made them a small as possible because they are still kind of small and they went crazy over it so that she can eat for days and they're not that picky but you don't want to feed them the wrong thing because they don't know they just eat, LOL. Good luck and bread was a good answer. Just don't overdo itFlakes are perhaps the most commonly purchased variety of goldfish food. They are relatively nutritious, as far as dried foods are concerned, and they will keep a goldfish from starving, but what most people don’t realize is that the diet of a goldfish should not consist of flakes on a daily basis. This is because the air bubbles ingested by fancy goldfish while eating a meal of flakes can build up over a few days or less, causing swimbladder / constipation related issues. Try to feed flakes no more than twice a week. I recommend having at least two different kinds of flakes on hand – one protein-based, the other vegetable-based. To help minimize this when flakes are fed, they should be pre-soaked in tank water before feeding; never sprinkled on the surface. This can cause the fish to gulp air while attempting to snag a flake. Dip the pinch of flakes in and out of the water, allowing the flakes to absorb the droplets. Do not rub your fingers together; simply let the flakes soften until mushy. Then you may feed them directly to your goldfish.Who doesn’t love to eat? Goldfish have a never-ending appetite, and can literally eat themselves to the point of death if given enough food. This can potentially cause novice owners to put too much food into the water. Overfeeding goldfish can seriously mess up the water quality in a tank and cause the fish to be poisoned, so it is best to feed small amounts of food once or twice daily, what they will consume in a 2-3 minute time span. Goldfish are one of the most popular pet fish, but what do goldfish eat? Understanding what to feed your pet fish is essential so you can provide it with proper nutrition and keep it healthy for a long, happy life.
